Wise old owl lived in an oak

Wise old owl lived in an oak

Image by National Library of Scotland
Station platform, near Amiens, France, during World War I. Two unidentified men on a station platform. One appears to have a British Army greatcoat and an officer’s cap, although he is wearing civilian trousers. The cap badge is indistinct but possibly bears crossed carbines. The second man is in a dark uniform, with a braided kepi-style cap of the type worn by French officers.
The photograph has no original caption. The station is likely to be in the area near Amiens, as one sign reads ‘Vers Amiens’ (towards Amiens). The second sign is a propaganda notice against careless talk. It reads ‘A wise old owl lived in an oak. The more he saw the less he spoke. The less he spoke the more he heard. Soldiers should imitate that old bird.’

Petticoat Row Shop, c. 1880s

Interior of a Petticoat Row shop, with three shop keepers standing below a large Bric-A-Brac sign. The shop offers general household goods. Note the Nantucket baskets on the left. c. 1880s
In the early and middle years of the 19th century, the preponderance of women merchants, selling everything from daily necessities to exotic goods, gave Centre Street the nickname "Petticoat Row." Generally, in the 19th century, women’s roles became increasingly confined to the home as the shortage of male labor was overcome. But on Nantucket, whaling husbands were away for long stretches— as long as five years—and the dangers of whaling often left women widows. The Quaker influence, which valued competence of all sorts in women, and hard work and thrift in everyone, was crucial as well.

Description: A group of young boys and girls look over something in the street. They wear the jackets called a echogorie and pants called a epajie. Both boys and girls have long braided hairs. Girls have etaenggie at the end of the braids. Their costume would have been worn only on festival days, in this case (because of the heavy winter clothing worn by them) almost certainly on the Lunar New Year, which occurs in late January or early February.

Once a farm – now just marked by a board

Image by National Library of Scotland
The two soldiers seen here have paused next to a sign for ‘Marten’s Farm.’ Tragically, the war has taken its toll on the farm. The ground is battle-scarred and laced with barbed wire, and the trees have been reduced to splinters. The two men sit amongst the rubble of what was once possibly a farm building.
It is estimated that in France alone approximately 8,000 square miles of farmland were laid to waste as a result of the war.

Cheerio!

Image by National Library of Scotland
British and French soldiers drinking wine together, France, during World War I. Adapting a windowsill into an ‘al fresco’ bar counter, these French and British soldiers toast each others health with a glass of wine. From a propaganda angle, such a friendly gathering of soldiers drinking and talking with one another would have been the perfect image to convey an impression of harmonious co-operation between the two Allied countries.
As the original caption for this image has ‘Cheerio!’ written on its back, it could be that this photograph was taken just after the armistice had been signed. The nationalities of the Allied soldiers who fought on the Western Front were easy to identify because of the contrasting shapes of their helmets. The British wore flat helmets, while the French wore big, rounded helmets – similar to a old-fashioned firemans helmet – that were called ‘Adrian’ helmets, named after the helmet’s designer.
